Alan Manktelow
I studied painting and printmaking at Eastbourne School of Art and obtained a degree from Sheffield College of Art. Thereafter I followed an independent course of study in painting practice and technique. I see my work as a continuing process of discovery. It stems from two sources: the Symbolist (or Idealist) art of the late 19th Century and the art of the Ancient Mediterranean World, with its infusion into the wider development of Western Art, through Neo-Platonist and other schools of esoteric thought. I aspire to a view of art which has about it a sensuous quality of intuitive wisdom hovering on the brink of Dionysian abandonment; figures poised within a timeless Arcadia of dream-like uncertainty. Recently I’ve travelled in and around Naples studying and absorbing the influence of Roman wall paintings. I’m hopeful this will infuse into my work in unexpected ways.
