Abigail Anna Myers
Creativity has always been integral in my life, whether painting, writing, taking photographs or simply the way that I see the world. Studying for a degree in Fine Art was a natural choice and the very conceptual based slant of the course allowed me the freedom to explore the images and ideas in my head through whichever medium suited the particular concept I was working on. I continue to work across a variety of media including acrylic, spray paints, photography, pastels, ink, pen, and collage. The finished works reflect this diversity, as well as the wide range of influences from geometric abstraction, abstract expressionism, pop art and graffiti through to conceptual art, poetry and literature. My process begins with a thought, a feeling, a momentary fleeting image or line of prose, incorporating humour, pain, and love, in an attempt to capture my peculiar perspective of the world; the dark splendour of the mundane, the imperfections of life and ultimately the beauty of small things. Abigail Anna Myers showed a strong interest in visual art from an early age. Drawing, painting and construction progressed from childhood games to serious art practice through education at GCSE, Foundation and up to degree level, achieving a BA Hons in Fine Art from the University of Portsmouth in 2004. Myers also has a love for the literary arts, and spent many hours writing poems and short stories as a child. This continued alongside her visual arts practice, gaining A levels in both English Language and Theatre Studies, as well as completing a module in creative writing during her degree. Encouraged by a creative family of poets, painters and dancers, art and creativity have always been an integral part of Myers character and lifestyle. Although raising two children herself interrupted her ability to produce work, she has recently returned with vigour to her fine art practice; inspired by her voluntary work organising Art Exhibitions at The Under Ground Theatre between 2013 - 2016.
“Working with some very talented local artists was a huge inspiration, both in terms of revitalising my desire to paint, but also practically in terms of giving oneself the time and space to produce work. An artist will work in a spare bedroom, the kitchen table, the floor or a corner of the living room if necessary. Once your head becomes full of colours and pictures you must let them out, or your heart will begin to die.”
Myers’ process begins with a thought, a feeling, a momentary fleeting image or line of prose. Working in a variety of media she produces abstract pieces, which may be loose and painterly or contain bold graphic patterns. Text is a regular feature in these works, in the form of poetic lines or philosophical mantras. Both image and words are left ambiguous for the viewer to arrive at their own interpretation. Another medium practiced by Myers is photography, which she uses to capture her unique and peculiar perspective of the world; the dark splendour of the mundane, the imperfections of life and ultimately the beauty of small things.
Myers practices her art at home, working from her front room, or outside. Alongside this she runs the Eastbourne Artists website and is Marketing and Exhibitions Assistant to successful local artist David Armitage.
